Air Force Careers & Required ASVAB Scores
The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is a multiple choice test given by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command to determine which job you will be best qualified for upon enlistment in the United States Armed Forces. After completing the ASVAB and receiving your score, you can then decide which job, from the list of eligible jobs for your particular score you would like to choose for your career in the military. Jobs in the Army and Marine Corps are referred to as an “MOS” or Military Occupational Specialty and in the Air Force it jobs are referred to as an “AFSC” or Air Force Specialty Code. The Navy and Coast Guard refer to their jobs as “ratings” or “rate” for short. The following will give you a breakdown of job codes and their required ASVAB scores for each military branch.
The ASVAB is broken down into subtests. Composite scores are figured from the ASVAB subtest scores and are used to help classify new recruits into military occupations. Each branch of service assembles its own set of composites based on the combination of subtests that correlate to the jobs they have available. The subtest for the ASVAB are as follows: General Science(GS), Arithmetic Reasoning(AR), Word Knowledge(WK), Paragraph Comprehension(PC), Numerical Operations(NO), Coding Speed(CS), Auto and Shop(AS), Mathematics Knowledge(MK), Mechanical Comprehension(MC), Electronics Information(EI) and Sum of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension(VE). The following chart indicates the composite scores that are computed for each branch of service, which category they fall under and how they are computed.
ASVAB and Air Force
The Air Force breaks down the ASVAB subtest scores into qualification areas to determine which jobs you are best suited for. These qualification areas and the set of composites that make up each are as follows:
Qualification Area | ASVAB Subtests Composite |
G – General | Verbal Expression(WK + PC) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) |
M – Mechanical | Mechanical Comprehension(MC), General Science(GS) and 2 times Auto and Shop Information(AS) |
A – Administrative | Numerical Operations(NO),Coding Speed(CS) and Verbal Expression(WK + PC) |
E – Electrical | Arithmetic Reasoning(AR), Mathematics Knowledge(MK), Electronics |
The following are the Air Force AFSC’s and their required ASVAB scores:
